Company Overview
RetailWorld Asia Co. is Japan's largest omni-channel retail corporation, operating more than 4,000 stores across six Asian markets β Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, and Singapore. Founded in 1982 by Hiroshi Nakamura in Osaka, the company began as a regional department store chain and has evolved over four decades into a diversified retail conglomerate spanning fashion, electronics, home goods, groceries, and a market-leading digital commerce platform.
The company is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) and is a constituent of the Nikkei 225 index. It employs approximately 95,000 people, making it one of Japan's largest private-sector employers. Chairman Yuki Nakamura β grandson of the founder and the company's CEO from 1998 to 2019 β is widely credited with transforming RetailWorld from a traditional department store operator into a technology-driven retail platform capable of competing with Amazon Japan and Rakuten.
RetailWorld's digital transformation, executed between 2015 and 2022, resulted in the development of an integrated e-commerce platform that now accounts for 34% of total group revenue β up from just 6% in 2015. The company's loyalty programme, RetailWorld Plus, has over 28 million active members and provides the data infrastructure underlying its personalised marketing and inventory management systems.
